This university sucks....
Number one for sport in Finland but the sport facilities are hardly available... For instance, gym randomly booked, or when you get the chance to book a place for volleyball, there are 20 people for one court playing together....

Also the university likes to control whatever you're doing, every single door needs an access and if you don't beg for it to Clavius office, you will be stuck outside buildings... "Well being of student is our number one priority" they say....
They are proudly failing.

I worked there for three years as a postdoc there. The city is small, but the surroundings are beautiful and the lake in the middle of the city is like an amusement park, offering lots of outdoor activities (water sports in summer and x-country skiing in winter) including sauna boats 🙂 My highlight was having my own small private sauna in my shower room. The university is okay. The unit I belong to was not international and not interactive (doors were always shot and I was not sure if anyone was working in those offices even before the pandemic, no seminars, no gathering), but people from other units were much more international, friendly, and easier to talk to. The university overall did not look very international and is not so open to cultural differences in faculty and HR people's minds. It is understandable given the location, but the reality was bit too contrasting to what they claim. They claim that the university is dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion and they have lots of foreign researchers and students. I think the HR admin people and faculty members I met are all white. I rather think that many of them are not very accustomed to different ways of thinking. Many university people are local and spent decades there often obtaining all academic degrees there. I never met anyone from Japan or China when I was there, for example. But Finland is a wonderful place to experience. It is simple and beautiful. People are bit too shy, but as far as I know people in Helsinki looked always happy when I talked to them to ask directions on the street. I definitely loved every moment I lived in Helsinki (except the day someone stole my wallet) and worked as a postdoc there. I highly recommend the University of Helsinki. It is a wonderful university and truly international. If you like Moomin and Marimekko, it is an unbeatable place to live on the planet!

A good place to study. The placement of the different departments can get a bit confusing though, so make sure to check the maps well in advance so you don't miss your schedules!
